ADVANCING MARINERS

SIMULATOR COURSES

BRIDGE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

BRM is a 3-day course designed to strengthen bridge team coordination, leadership, and overall safety in vessel operations. The course covers human factors, situational awareness, collision avoidance, risk assessment, rules of the road, voyage planning, decision making, and communication skills. Through a focus on real-world application, participants develop enhanced awareness, effective communication practices, and sound judgment to reduce risks and foster a proactive safety culture on the bridge.

ADVANCED PILOTHOUSE MANAGEMENT

This course is flexible and can be customized to the specific needs of each company. APM includes similar topics to BRM course (see above), and may include new material and protocols developed by the company.

ROSE POINT ELECTRONIC CHARTING SYSTEM

This course is a one-day (8-hour) course that applies Rose Point ECS4 in various underway scenarios using sophisticated navigation simulation. Participants train on a full-mission bridge simulator system equipped with ECS, gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to utilize Rose Point ECS fully and efficiently. Designed to enhance navigation safety, the course emphasizes practical application to improve confidence and proficiency in electronic charting.

DESIGNATED EXAMINER COURSE

This 4-hour course is designed to prepare and assess potential designated examiners in accordance with the training requirements outlined in 46 CFR 10.405 and addressed in NVIC 03-16 and 19-14. Upon successful completion, participants will demonstrate an understanding of the role of a designated examiner, knowledge of the five-step assessment process and its practical application, the ability to complete a TOAR assessment on a candidate, and the skills needed to conduct effective, thorough, and objective evaluations.

MATE/STEERSMAN COURSE

This course combines simulator training with classroom instruction to build foundational skills for mariners. In the first week, participants focus on basic boat handling, rules of the road, and navigation systems, earning 24 days of sea service. The second week emphasizes safety drills and incident response training, with 26 days of sea service awarded. Successful completion requires supervised simulations, homework assignments across both weeks, and end-of-week examinations to ensure proficiency and readiness.

TOWING OFFICER ASSESSMENT PROGRAM

This program is an essential step for mariners seeking to qualify as a towing vessel deck officer (Master, Mate, or Pilot) in the United States, as required by the U.S. Coast Guard. Offered by CME for Western Rivers and Near Coastal routes at the Houston facility, this one-week course places two mariners in a private simulator suite with close-quarter maneuvering capability to complete the necessary assessments in a realistic training environment.
